I am wanting to put ceramic tile on my countertops. The formica on my countops is very tight. I was wondering, can I tile over the formica if I clean it good and rought it up?

Dear Kib -
The best product for this is an adhesive/underlay combination - It is called TAVY Thin Skin / 007 . It is available at Lowes by special order. Check out the website www.tavytools.com . There are video segments from a home improvement TV show and one of them is specifically tile over formica countertop. The color chosen is not too exciting, but I have seen projects where 16X16 granite squares were used with pre-fab bullnose and it looks spectacular and done for about 25% of the cost of custom granite.
Hope this helps - please respond if you would like me to e-mail you pictures of the other projects.

Dear Casey, glad to have you and anyone interested in tiling problems visit our forum, however this forum is for advice from approved moderators, not personal negative comments from individual contractor/installers who are always free to do what they think is best on their own installations. The other tile forums welcome this kind of back and forth rhetoric, but we ask you and others to refrain from making those statements here on “The Tile Doctor”. No hard feelings, just trying to keep things “sane”. Armen Tavy
