help with lighting design for cathedral ceiling
We're DIY people and have this project which is proving to be a little more difficult that I expected it to be. It is a great room 16X24 with cathedral ceiling. We have not sheetrocked it because I am undecided what kind of light system to have over the 16' wide walls. Sometimes I think I would like a valance with flouorscent lights behind it; other I think track lights would be better if we cover them with some sort of crown moulding. Rope lights need transformer and I don't want to bother with that, etc...

My husband is doing the work, and he says I am driving him crazy because I cannot decide which way to go. I want to have lights...

Discolored Slate
I had multicolor slate laid in my kitchen. My wife and I waited about 4 days to seal. About a week later we noticed some whitish discoloration around the edges of all the tile about a 1/4 inch thick. I used sparks glamor stone brand sealer. This was several months ago, we hoped it would go away but hasn't..... i believe i have come up with the culprit, but i am still looking for the solution, so if anyone has any ideas i sure would appreciate any input. latest diagnosis- when the guys "grouted" they did not wipe the grout over the whole tile they simply did the edges. the polymar in the grout absorbed into the slate around the edges and when...

Camping in Colorado!
Hi all,

We're heading on a camping trip, spending about 5 days or so in the Zirkel Wilderness near Steamboat Springs, CO. We'll be taking along the minimum needs for our hike as 4 of us will be travelling together... 2 establishing a basecamp, and 2 hiking several mountain peaks in the area.

I was just curious if there were any other hikers/backpackers hanging out here (or lurking) and what some of your favorite types of gear are. Shoes, tents, pads, bags, hammocks, cookstoves, etc. Or perhaps what types of foods you like to bring along and prepare.

Our trip is still over a month away and we still have a few last minute things to...

Help with stockade fencing
Our house has has been built up and the yard has a retaining wall that holds up the dirt. The retaining wall is about 4'. The house is on a built up hill. The current stockade fence is 6' and is very low and easily seen over. New neighbors have bought the land behind us and the are preparing to build. We would like to increase the height of the fence to allow us some privacy in our own yard. We also have a water drainage problem...the retaining wall does not have any drains in it at all. Water from the yard builds up behind the retaining wall and seeps down the wall and on the other side. Carrying the dirt from above the wall with it...

Stucco INSIDE my house??? WTH???
Maybe there is someone out there that has some insight. Our home was built in 1949. We absolutely have to pull down the walls in the bathroom because of mold (there was never an exhaust fan installed... but there will be soon!). Well, I didn't expect this to be easy. I've seen what happens when you pull older homes apart. BUT I have NEVER seen anything like this. My poor husband....

Base layer is 16" wide sheets of 3/8" sheetrock of some sort (its papered). Next, is wire mesh with about 1/2" of stucco adhered to it... no this is not plaster (not by a long shot). Then, (yes, there's more) about 1/8" of what looks like spackle to smooth out...

crank sensor
The previous post about the 93' civic engine shut off when stopping, now it comes to a new problem. After driving about 15-20 mn,check engine light is on.The code says"crank angle(crank sensor)".If i stop for 2-3 mn then start again, check engine light is not on until next 15-20 mn. My questions are:can the sensor be cleaned? Why it has to be 15-20 mn driving for the light on?If the sensor really bad the car cannot start? Please help.Thanks.

Trailer Hitch for Ram 1500
I am in the process of buying a 21 ft boat and need to put a trailer hitch on my 2005 Ram 1500. The boat is about 4000lbs. How do I determine the hitch I need? I can't find the tongue weight of the boat and trailer. Is a hitch that holds 500lbs enough?

Finding the boat I need is easier than finding the right hitch...

No heat, Hot water ok
My Crane 70-146 oil fired furnace fires up and makes hot water, but the pump does not circulate the water through the baseboards. The motor turns on and sounds fine, but still, no circulation. The label has fallen off the motor, so I don't know what make it is, but it looks to be original; approx 1975.

dusty concrete
I just had a slab poured and its dusty. I mean, if I rub the surface of it with my fingers and exert a little force the solid surface gives off a bit of grit. and if I keep rubbing I can easily rub off enough that it makes a depression. should concrete do that?

:wall: ...how can I lock the slab up so that If I lay tile over it,the tile will be secure and wont come loose later?

Leaking Whirlpool
I have a Whirlpool washer that we bought new, and it has always seemed to leak. I took the back plate off and determined that the used water and soap was coming from a clear plastic tube that is quite flexible and would be flat except for the water running thru it. I thought it might just be my wife loading too much wash with too much soap, but she insists she doesnt do that. I have a floor drain right next to it, and too many other issues to deal with it before this, but I can't believe everyone is fortunate enough to have a drain like I do, especially in an upstairs laundry room. What am I missing here! GVW9959K (model) CS5001086...

TPFH: Tile Partners for Humanity names Bob Daniels to New Industry Director Position, Scott Carothers to Board of Directors, and Celebrates Five Years of Industry Partnership.

In the position, Daniels will work within the industry to raise awareness of the value of partnering with TPFH and to raise money for the organization. TPFH will announce a major fundraising campaign, to be chaired by Daniels, this spring.
Daniels served as a member of the TPFH board of directors, representing the Ceramic Tile Education Foundation, from the fall of 2003 to last year. TPFH is excited to announce the addition of Scott Carothers, CTEF executive director, to its board.

“I’m really pleased to continue working with what I believe is a great cause,” Daniels said. “It makes good business sense for our industry to get behind TPFH and support our communities through our resources.”
TPFH also celebrated its fifth anniversary in late 2002. It will mark five years of projects in June 2008 on the anniversary of the DIY Network Build in Charlotte, NC, and the Jimmy Carter Work Projects in LaGrange and Valdosta, GA.
TPFH pledged a total of $1,250,000 worth of materials and labor to Habitat affiliates and projects over a five-year period. TPFH partners donated enough to surpass that goal – and TPFH signed another five-year pledge in the same amount beginning in early 2008.

The organization is guided by representatives of the seven leading industry organizations: Rick Church of the Ceramic Tile Distributors Association, Scott Carothers of the Ceramic Tile Education Foundation, Gray LaFortune of the Ceramic Tile Institute of America, Bart Bettiga of the National Tile Contractors Association, Eric Astrachan of the Tile Council of North America, Curt Rapp of TheTileDoctor.com, and Sheila Menzies of Tile Heritage Foundation.
